Mudras

Esoteric language of our hands

Mudras are hand gestures and hand movements. They are often used in combination with breathing exercises (pranayama), mantras and specific postures in a kriya. The word ‘Mudra’ is Sanskrit and literally means ‘seal’. A mudra is an expression of the esoteric language of the hands. They are thousands of years old. The movements and gestures are connected to the Prana or energy flow in your body and stimulate parts of your body and mind. Each area of the hand corresponds to a certain area of the body and is linked to different emotions and behaviors. By curling, crossing, stretching, and touching the fingers and palms, you activate these parts.

Buddhi Mudra and Gyan Mudra

For example the Buddhi Mudra: you unite your little finger and your thumb. This mudra will revitalise your energy and will strengthen your nervous system. It stimulates clear and conscious communication. Another well known mudra is the Gyan Mudra: unite the top of your index finger and the top of your thumb. The other fingers are stretched and united together. The index finger symbolises expansion. The thumb represents the ego. This mudra stimulates knowledge and wisdom, it brings peace and calm.

A Divine dance

To be honest, for me they are still mysterious movements of the hands that I find to be beautiful. They deeply effect my yoga practice and meditation. In a way it feels like I am dancing with the Divine. It touches a deep old wisdom that is stored in our collective consciousness. Sounds strange maybe, but these simple yet powerful hand gestures work in a calming and relaxing way. Practising yoga with mudras often results in a smile on my face that comes from a deep Joy within.

In our classes I use according to the Kundalini yoga practise specific mudras that perfectly fit the movements of the body, deepen your practise to go inwards with your attention and that open up blocked energy. So you will leave more freely and vitalised after class.
